Last term I worked on two projects. The images below are portraits from The Women and Children’s Lighthouse Mission, which is a a Christian based addiction recovery home that gives Mothers the opportunity to recuperate while maintaining or fighting for custody of their children.

The Loco Moco is a dish unique to Hawaii. There are many variations, but the essential loco moco consists of white rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy. As you can see, this particular version at the Hawaiian Style Cafe in Waimea, includes grilled onions. My cousin was eager to visit the Cafe to indulge in this ‘pile of goodness’ for breakfast. Each to their own I suppose.

Needless to say, he didn’t eat until dinner.
Meanwhile I had two scrambled eggs and wheat toast.
Dear Vog,
You are making it e x t r e m e l y difficult for me. I am sorry if I cursed your friend, the sky, when we flew through some turbulence on the way over here. But really, can you PLEASE go away now!?!? You see, I am supposed to be making pictures of great moments in GREAT LIGHT. You are being selfish and have kept the great light, actually, ALL the light, to yourself for the past week. Can you please share it? Pretty please with cream and sugar? Even if it’s for just a couple hours a day, I will be ever so grateful.
Thank you … Steph
Vog: an air pollution condition formed when sulfur dioxide and other gases emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight.

This is what I was driving through yesterday. This is intense vog. And no, the road doesn’t go downhill, there is just no visibility. Vog is common here, but not like this; this is extreme. I know exactly what’s going to happen; the vog will lift for my final 3 days and I will be scrambling. So please, if everyone can do a ‘no vog’ style rain dance for me, it would be appreciated!

I’m in Waimea, Hawaii (The Big Island) for 3 weeks for my travel class. I’m staying with family which is awesome! It’s a home away from home, literally! These images are from my first two days (last Thursday and Friday) where I took a drive on the Mountain Road to Hawi and attended HPA’s (Hawaiian Preparatory Academy) graduation. I bet you didn’t get to do a Hawaiian chant and dance while shirtless at your high school graduation! Until next post …
